Qingdao Movie Metropolis Opens

The Sunac/Wanda 408-acre film studio in Qingdao officially opened on April 28, 2018.  The facility includes a total of 40 soundstages, production studios, hotels and entertainment facilities.

The film studio in Qingdao was first announced in 2013, amid significant fanfare including invited Hollywood celebrities.   The film studio is now majority-owned by Sunac China Holdings and operated by the Wanda Group.

Wanda Group’s other entertainment ventures include:

  • The purchase of AMC Theatres in 2012 for $2.6 billion, followed by Carmike Cinemas and European chains.
  • Acquisition of Legendary Pictures for $3.5 billion, in 2016.
  • Attempted purchase of Dick Clark Productions, for $1 billion.
  • Attempted purchase of a 49% share in Paramount Pictures.
