The American Underground startup hub is located in the district.
The American Tobacco Historic District is situated within and surrounding the American Tobacco plant that closed permanently in 1987. The district includes more than a dozen buildings and structures built by the American Tobacco Company and its predecessors and successors, some dating to 1874. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 as the American Tobacco Company Manufacturing Plant.
